They control most of the temperate areas around the gate
In the desert creatures and constructs were deactivated.

They found very good chorite mines.
The area has VERY clean ley lines.
Atticus thinks it worthwhile to attempt to claim the desert.

Burned Letter to the Prince

My son,

I have heard of your great victory at the Battle of the Crimson Fields. You have done a great deed for Argost and the people will forever be in your debt. I have heard rumblings that you intend to go through the gate to attack whatever may have sent these creatures to our doorsteps. I understand the intent you have there but my magical advisors have told me that the gate is unstable and that we have no idea if it will stay open. I simply cannot afford to lose a sizable portion of the army as well as the heir to the throne. I am ordering you not to go through the gate. You may remain in the area of the Crimson Fields and set regular guards there, but we cannot go through the gate until after we know whether it can remain open.
